Thank you for being an active part of our community. We hope these discussions provide you with valuable perspectives and practical advice for your summer camp journey.

I always carry a pocket transition kit — an index card with three five-minute games and a calm-down cue — because those random gaps blow up fast; in interviews I also ask, “What’s your camper-to-staff ratio during transitions and who backs counselors up?” since no kit fixes weak coverage. Would you take a job if they dodge that?

I only say yes after shadowing one transition block to watch live headcounts and where the floater stations… @lee12 coverage is the tell — if they won’t let you shadow, ask for yesterday’s transition schedule with the floater and radio channels plus the rain plan; would you take it without that?

Deal-breaker for me is a written transition plan: I ask to see last summer’s schedule with coverage during five-minute gaps, rain plan, and who owns bathroom runs; if they can’t share that, I pass. With the surge of counselor postings last week, I’m also asking whether training hours are paid and if there’s a radio protocol for headcounts, @lee12’s coverage point included. Smaller camps may not have fancy docs, but they should at least send a simple “coverage map” before you accept.
