Last July, my whistle went missing five minutes before flag — classic CIT move — and instead of cracking down, I handed the lead to Maya, who turned roll call into a goofy rap and had 120 campers silent in 30 seconds. Funniest part for me is the lesson: let the prank land, then pass the mic — those little laughs are often the doorway a young leader needs; what harmless shenanigans have you seen turn into real growth?
Lost my whistle five minutes before flag, handed roll to our shy CIT, and his clap-back rhythm had 120 campers quiet in 30 seconds… > me is the lesson: let the prank land, then pass the mic — those little laughs are often the doorway Agreed — lean into it once, then debrief right after so the line between bit and chaos stays clear.
But i had my whistle go missing five minutes before flag once and started keeping a foam baton as the “mic” so I can “pass the mic” to a CIT for a 60-second roll call remix. It gets 120 campers locked in fast, but I set a hard stop if the bit drifts toward chaos.
I keep a ridiculous rubber chicken in my backpack; if someone hides my gear, the chicken becomes the ‘talking stick’ and I toss it to a CIT to lead a 60-second check-in — props take the pressure off, as @alex4415 hinted… Only caveat: I set a timer and give one cue — ‘end with today’s safety note’ — so the bit stays fun and tight.
