Our overnight safety and homesick toolkit

But we run staggered 10 pm, midnight, and 2 am cabin rounds with radio check-ins and log meds in CampDoc; for homesickness, comfort kits and planned first-night notes via Bunk1 before lights out have cut early pickups by about 40% since 2022. What tools or protocols are you leaning on this summer to keep nights safe and those first tears manageable?

One thing that’s worked is a laminated 60‑second homesick script for overnights — starting with “I can’t fix missing home, but I can sit with you and breathe” — so every counselor says the same thing and we log it in CampDoc right after. Only caveat: reading it verbatim can feel stiff on night one, so we have staff rehearse it during training. Do you hold Bunk1 notes for morning, or let counselors deliver them if a kid is struggling at midnight?
