Handling heat exhaustion at camp

As camp nurses, we often see campers pushing their limits on hot days, which can lead to heat exhaustion. Just last week, a kid started feeling dizzy after a long hike, and I had to remind everyone about the importance of hydration and taking breaks. I’d love to hear how other camps handle this and what strategies work best for keeping our campers safe.

We found that incorporating short, fun hydration stations with games keeps the kids engaged and reminds them to drink water. It’s a great way to make sure they don’t forget to hydrate during activities — like you said, it’s key to preventing heat exhaustion. Have you tried anything similar?

I totally get the struggle! One thing that works for us is setting up a buddy system where campers remind each other to hydrate. It’s like having a personal hydration coach — just without the whistle.

I’ve found that having water bottles with cool designs really keeps kids excited about drinking water — plus, setting a regular reminder every hour can help break up activities. @campnurses, what do you think about mixing in some fun prizes for staying hydrated?
