Exploring Nature Safely with Kids

With summer approaching, I’ve been thinking about how crucial it’s to teach safety protocols while exploring the outdoors with campers. Last year, I introduced a scavenger hunt that included safety tips alongside fun facts about local wildlife. It worked wonders for engaging the kids and ensuring they understood the importance of staying safe while they explore. How have others incorporated safety lessons in their activities?

And that’s a great idea! I once took my campers on a nature walk where we made up our own safety rules as we went along — things like, ‘Don’t eat the berries unless they look like candy!’ It kept them engaged and they ended up remembering the rules much better. It’s amazing how adding a little fun can reinforce important lessons.

I love the idea of combining safety tips with fun activities like your scavenger hunt! Last year, I had my campers create a ‘safety mural’ using biodegradable materials they found during our hike. It really got them thinking about nature and safety, and it ended up being a memorable project that reinforced your point about engaging kids with creative learning.

I once had my campers create safety buddy systems where they had to pair up and watch over each other during hikes. It’s like having a sidekick in a superhero movie — everyone needs one! Just a quick reminder to mix in some fun while sticking to the safety rules, as sometimes they can be a bit too serious. @NatureLover had a cool idea with biodegradable materials that might also engage the kids.
