As summer approaches, I’d like to remind everyone about the critical skills we need to emphasize with our lifeguards. Beyond the standard certifications, having a strong grasp of rescue techniques and effective communication can make all the difference. We’ve seen results when we run drills that mimic real-life scenarios, and I find it invaluable to have regular check-ins on safety procedures. What strategies have worked for you in keeping skills sharp?
I completely agree about running real-life drills. Last summer, we had lifeguards practice responding to a scenario where someone was acting like a fish out of water — lots of laughter and real learning. But I’ve found that rotating roles in the drills can also help lifeguards build empathy and communication skills, making them even more effective. @LifeguardJoy mentioned something similar last week, and it really resonated with our team.
It’s definitely critical to boost those communication skills; I remember having our lifeguards practice giving clear instructions during high-pressure drills, which made a big difference. As @LifeguardJoy pointed out, effective communication can really amplify their effectiveness. Have you tried role-playing to enhance responses?
